Old Frock and Peony.

Old Frock with Peony
Oil on Canvas
Melbourne
2007

This was a good challenge - painting shot taffeta. After looking at a few old masters and how they handle textiles I thought it my duty put a bit of effort in on this front. It was the peony roses that proved to be by far the greatest challenge.

In 2006 we lived in Wellington, high above the harbour looking East over some magnificent mountains and foothills. Cleared of native vegetation by settlers in the 1840s, these hills have never recovered their former glory. The survivors of the Wahine tragedy were washed up on the beaches at the foot of the hills. Here is a photograph of the same range, from which I drew inspiration for this more abstract painting.

Egg Tempera on Board with gold leaf

This Icon was an exercise in Roberto Paulet's class at Inverlochy Art School in Wellington. It look an entire term to complete as it was done in the ancient traditional fashion. Getting to grips with mixing the pigment with egg yolk to make the paint was the most challenging aspect of the project. The stinky boiled rabbit skin glue used in the initial preparation of the board will not be forgotten. We also studied the fascinating origins and symbolism behind traditional Icons.

Clea and Moi

This is Clea my art teacher in Minneapolis. She is well known in the Minneapolis art scene was one of the bright lights of our 3 years in Minnesota. This is the portrait she did of me before we left to return to New Zealand in 2004. Clea, though right handed, paints portraits with her left hand. It gives her work a very funky intuitive edge.

Minneapolis Studio School

This is where I got started with painting while living in Minneapolis. I was very lucky to have the lovely Clea Felien as a tutor at her Minneapolis Studio School. Clea teaches classic realism in the atalier tradition. It was an excellent discipline to learn as it taught me how to really observe and then gave me a framework to translate what I saw to the canvas.
